A holiday dinner gone wrong is the subject here, with drink as the culprit. The record links the watercolor to a November 1896 issue, most likely of the humor weekly *Puck*, which published satirical illustrations on current social habits. Thanksgiving had been a national observance since Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation, and by the 1890s the feast was a familiar setting for family gatherings and the excesses that came with them. Cartoons like this one used the holiday's ideals of gratitude and moderation as a foil for the unruly guest, so the humor depends on the gap between the table's respectable ritual and the mess it has become.
