Theodore Roosevelt rides in a horse-drawn carriage with two other men on inauguration day in Washington, D.C., while more men walk alongside the vehicle. Roosevelt had come to office after William McKinley's assassination in September 1901, and he was sworn in for a full term on March 4, 1905, after winning the 1904 election. Ceremonial processions of that period still relied heavily on carriages, though motorcars were beginning to appear on the city's streets. The photograph was made by Frank J. Cullen, whose copyright is noted in the record.
