Theodore Roosevelt is shown here in an open carriage on the way to the U.S. Capitol for his inauguration, raising his hat to the crowds lining the route. The March 1905 ceremony marked the start of his first full term after he had taken office following William McKinley's assassination in September 1901. Photographer George Grantham Bain, one of the early news photographers working in Washington, recorded the parade scene, which captures the public festivity of inauguration day in the capital at the turn of the century.
