Five members of the Clark family, all sisters by the record's title, sit for this half plate daguerreotype in three-quarter length, each facing the camera. A handwritten note in the case, on stationery of the Arts Club of Washington and in the hand of photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, names the women as Harriet Allen, Ladonia Hoy, Joanette Benjamin, Juliaette Millard and Laura Palmer, and Johnston later gave the piece to the Library of Congress. The photographer is unidentified, but the portrait dates from the 1840 to 1860 period, when daguerreotypes were the most common form of photographic portrait and relatives often sat together to mark a family gathering.
