A handwritten note on the back of this sixth-plate daguerreotype identifies the sitter as Chancy Brown, Sergeant at Arms, and shows him in three-quarter length, facing the camera. The plate dates from between 1856 and 1860, when daguerreotypes dominated portraiture, though its maker remains unidentified. It survives in the records of the American Colonization Society, founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. The image was later shown in an exhibition on Augustus Washington, an African American daguerreotypist working in the same decades.
