Rather than a crowd at work, this picture shows a single young woman standing in a wheat field, sickle in hand, pausing to listen to a lark overhead. It is a photograph of a painting signed by Jules Breton, the French artist who spent much of his career recording the lives of peasant farmers around Courrières in northern France. Breton's idealized but carefully observed harvest scenes were widely admired in Europe and the United States in the late nineteenth century. The Detroit Publishing Company made this reproduction between about 1900 and 1920, carrying the painting's quiet meditation on rural labor to a broader public.
