Cathedral Mansions, a large apartment building in northwest Washington, appears in this view from the years just before the United States entered World War I. The building stood near the site of the Washington Cathedral, which was under construction at the time, so it sat in a neighborhood that was growing quickly. The National Photo Company produced thousands of commercial views of the capital in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative belongs to that record. The streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, not from the scene itself.
