Few hospital names in Washington carry as much history as Walter Reed, the Army physician whose 1900 yellow fever research showed that mosquitoes spread the disease. This view shows the nurses' home on the hospital grounds, recorded on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative by the National Photo Company, which documented the capital's buildings and institutions in the years around the First World War. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the gradual deterioration of its original coating, and they give the image a soft, aged character.
