Providence Hospital, a Catholic hospital founded by the Sisters of Providence in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative, one of the many views the National Photo Company made of the city in the early twentieth century. The company, which operated from 1906 to 1926, sold views of Washington's buildings, streets and institutions to tourists and publishers, and its collection now preserves a detailed record of the capital in those years. The catalog date is only a range, and the record notes that the title came from data written on the negative or its sleeve rather than from a verified source, so the exact vantage point and year are uncertain. The negative also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
