Set on a hill in southeast Washington above the Anacostia River, the Government Hospital for the Insane opened in 1855 as a federal institution, and over the following decades it grew into a sprawling campus of wards and grounds. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, which dates from roughly 1910 to 1925. The streaks and blemishes across the plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, a reminder of how fragile these negatives are.
