Few institutions in the capital sat as far from public view as the Government Hospital for the Insane, which stood on a hillside in southeast Washington above the Anacostia River. Founded in 1855 with the backing of reformer Dorothea Dix, it later became known as St. Elizabeths. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm known for city views and postcards, made this negative between 1910 and 1925. Faint streaks across the glass come from deterioration in the original coating, not from the scene itself.
