Providence Hospital, which the National Photo Company recorded on this glass negative, was a Catholic hospital in the nation's capital, run by the Sisters of Charity and founded in the early 1860s. The negative dates from roughly 1910 to 1926, when the company photographed Washington's institutions, streets and public buildings for commercial sale and reproduction. The title comes from the company's own notation and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original emulsion coating are visible on the glass, and they show how these early plates have weathered.
