Perched on the high ground of Mount Saint Alban in northwest Washington, the National Cathedral was still a work in progress when this glass negative was made around 1925. Construction of the Gothic-style church began in 1907 and continued for most of the twentieth century, so photographs from these years capture a building rising slowly over time. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early decades of the century, recorded the city's landmarks and streets. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from age and the gradual deterioration of the original coatings, so they are worth keeping in mind when reading fine detail.
