Few buildings on the National Mall were as ambitious as the New National Museum, whose Beaux-Arts facade anchors this view from the years just before the First World War. Completed in 1910 to hold the growing collections of the Smithsonian's U.S. National Museum, it was later renamed the National Museum of Natural History. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its photographs of American towns, landmarks and scenery around the turn of the century, recorded the building on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a large format favored for detailed architectural work.
