This view shows the New National Museum on the National Mall, the building that housed the Smithsonian's natural history and anthropology collections after it opened in 1910. Its name was later changed to the National Museum of Natural History, which is why the title carries that bracketed phrase. The building also held the national art collection for a time, so it served as both a science museum and an early home for American art. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many commercial views of American cities and landmarks around the turn of the 20th century, made the glass negative. The left side of the plate is cracked and has been taped, a reminder of how fragile these early photographic records are.
