The skeletons in this stereograph show the National Museum's exhibit halls in Washington, D.C., where bones were arranged for close study of animal anatomy. Victorian museums often displayed skeletons in long rows so visitors could compare how different species were built. The H.C. White Company of North Bennington, Vermont, was one of the largest publishers of stereograph cards, and its views were sold to tourists and households who looked at them through hand viewers. The record also lists the writer Bret Harte among the names attached to the card, a reminder that these views were often marketed as both entertainment and education.
