This glass negative records the Riggs National Bank, one of the best-known financial institutions in Washington, D.C., which traced its roots to 1836 and became a fixture of the city's downtown business district. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital's streets, buildings and institutions in large numbers during the early 1900s, made the image around 1921 to 1922. Visible streaks and blemishes in the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, so the negative shows its age as well as its subject.
