Riggs National Bank, a fixture of the capital's financial district, is the subject of this 8 by 6 inch glass negative, which dates to roughly 1921 to 1922. Founded in 1836, Riggs was one of Washington's oldest banks and was long associated with the city's government and diplomatic community. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, whose photographers recorded the city's buildings and streets in the early twentieth century. Note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coatings.
