Cathedral Mansions, an apartment building on Connecticut Avenue in northwest Washington, is the subject of this view, dated between 1916 and 1917. Its name points to the nearby Washington National Cathedral, whose construction on Mount Saint Alban was underway in those years. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets and buildings on glass negatives from the late 1890s into the 1930s. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, and they are worth noticing as signs of the negative's age.
