Cathedral Mansions, the large apartment building on Connecticut Avenue, took its name from the Washington Cathedral then rising on the hill nearby. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington's streets, buildings and institutions in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative around 1916 or 1917. The title comes from the studio's own notes and has not been independently verified, and the negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
