The National Photo Company, a Washington-based studio that produced a huge body of commercial views in the early twentieth century, turned its glass-plate camera on the Cuban capital in this image of a municipal building in Havana. The record gives the title only as unverified information copied from the negative or its sleeve, so the specific building is not confirmed here, but the date range of roughly 1908 to 1919 places it in an era when Havana was expanding rapidly under American influence after the Spanish-American War. Visitors should also notice the surface of the glass itself: the record notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coatings, which give the image its characteristic texture.
