Corocoro, a copper-mining town in the Bolivian highlands, is the setting for this view of the work of washing crushed copper ore to separate the metal from the surrounding rock. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that sold commercial views of places around the world in the early 1900s, made the negative sometime between 1908 and 1919, though the title comes from unverified company notes. Copper was central to Bolivia's export economy during these years, and scenes like this recorded the manual labor behind that trade. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect deterioration in its original coating.
