Plaza de Orenas is the subject of this glass negative, a view of a Santiago, Chile, square taken sometime between 1908 and 1919, according to the record's date range. The National Photo Company, a Washington-based commercial studio that sent photographers across the world, produced many views like it for travel and publication. Santiago's central plazas, laid out in the Spanish colonial grid, were long the city's civic and social centers. The negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass plates, which are worth noticing as signs of the material's age.
