Few posters from the war name a holiday as plainly as this one, announcing a Journée du Poilu on December 25 and 26, 1915, organized by the French Parliament. "Poilu," roughly "hairy one," was the affectionate nickname French infantrymen gave themselves during the First World War. Maurice Neumont signed the lithograph in 1915, and this is a signed proof sheet; a larger edition also circulated. The day aimed to raise support for troops in the field during a hard winter of trench warfare, when comforts from home mattered greatly.
