The Journée du Poilu, held on December 25 and 26, 1915, was a two-day national campaign organized under parliamentary auspices to support France's front-line infantrymen, whose nickname, *poilu*, roughly means "hairy one." Maurice Neumont signed and dated this color lithograph in 1915, and this example is a signed proof sheet. Wartime posters like this one carried appeals for public support into towns and cities far from the trenches, and the poster's use of the soldier's everyday nickname shows how the campaign tried to make ordinary men the face of national sacrifice.
