Few posters from the French home front are tied to a single holiday as closely as this one, which advertises the Journée du Poilu, held on December 25 and 26, 1915, and organized by Parliament. "Poilu" was the affectionate name for the French infantryman, and the day aimed to raise support for men serving at the front during the first winter of trench warfare. Maurice Neumont, whose name and the year 1915 appear on the sheet, designed the lithograph, and this copy is a signed proof rather than a standard printing. Its color printing shows how the wartime state used commercial poster art to ask ordinary civilians for help.
