Dated to the 25-26 December 1915 Journée du Poilu, this color lithograph asks the French public to support the soldiers at the front, and its title uses "poilu," the familiar nickname for the French infantryman. The slogan, "With you and by you we will vow to save France," is attributed to Léon Gambetta, the republican statesman who led national resistance during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, so the poster links the wartime appeal to an older tradition of national defense. The artist signed the sheet as L. Jonas. At roughly 122 by 80 centimeters, it was made to be posted in public places where passersby could read it from a distance.
