Few posters from the First World War carry the language of the front as directly as this one, which takes its title from the *poilu*, the French infantryman whose nickname roughly meant "the hairy one." Charles Léandre, a caricaturist better known for satirical drawings than for lithography, signed this two-color poster for a national day of tribute held October 31 and November 1, 1915, organized by Parliament. Such days raised money and goodwill for soldiers and their families, and the poster's subjects pair military personnel with women, reflecting the home front that these appeals depended on. Its tall format of 120 by 80 centimeters suited the street hoardings where posters like it were pasted.
