Few nineteenth-century women worked as steadily for abolition and the vote as Lucy Stone, and this small portrait, set into a button mount, shows her in a format popular in the early 1900s. The backing is stamped with the name of A.R. Lopez & Bro., a firm on School Street in Boston, and the print belongs to the Blackwell family papers, reflecting the family's close ties to Stone. Her husband, Henry Browne Blackwell, was a longtime suffrage ally, and Stone helped found the American Woman Suffrage Association in 1869 and edited the Woman's Journal. A button bearing her face would have served as both keepsake and public statement of allegiance.
