Its title, *Boss of the block*, suggests a woman who holds sway over her neighborhood, and the print seems to treat her with a knowing, good-humored eye. Martin Lewis, an Australian-born printmaker who worked mostly in New York, built his reputation on close studies of city life, and he often used aquatint to lay down deep, velvety tones that turn ordinary streets into scenes of quiet drama. Dated about 1939, the work comes from the years when Depression-era realism still shaped American printmaking. The impression is signed in pencil, a detail that collectors of Lewis's work often look for.
