*In the Crowd* (1931) is a lithograph by Mabel Dwight, signed in pencil and printed by George Miller, and its title points to the subject: an anonymous mass of people, with the despair the catalog assigns to it set against the crowd rather than any single figure. The print appeared in the Depression years, when many American artists turned to lithography and other printmaking methods to record economic hardship for a wide audience. Its place in the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Collection at the Library of Congress, and its listing in Dwight's catalog raisonné, make it a useful example of how realist printmakers of the 1930s handled urban life.
