Its title, *The Embroidery Frame*, points to the object at the center of the picture: a young girl at the wooden hoop and fabric that were a common fixture of parlors and sewing rooms around 1900. The print is signed with the artist's monogram, MW, and is one of the artistic photographs Frances Benjamin Johnston collected and gave to the Library of Congress in 1948. Platinum printing, prized by pictorial photographers for its soft tones and matte surface, was at its height in these years, and the picture reflects the period's interest in quiet scenes of women's everyday work. It was later published in the 2001 volume *Ambassadors of Progress* and included in that book's exhibition.
