Titled "Contemplation" and headed in French "Les femmes rêvées," or "Ideal beauties," this color lithograph presents a pensive woman as a model of feminine ideals. M. Alophe composed and drew it, Jacomme & Cie printed it, and Goupil & Cie published it in Paris, Berlin, and New York around 1851. The three-city imprint shows how widely the firm's prints traveled in the mid-nineteenth century, when such images decorated middle-class parlors on both sides of the Atlantic. The copyright notice held by W. Schaus, a New York art dealer, marks the American side of that trade.
