Camp Douglas, a small village in Juneau County in west-central Wisconsin, was a country railroad town in 1914, when its economy rested on farming, dairying, and the trade that moved through its depot. Farm families came into town to ship milk, grain, and livestock and to buy supplies, so the streets served as a meeting point for the surrounding countryside. Across the state that year, the Progressive politics associated with Governor Robert La Follette still shaped public debate, and small towns like this one followed state fairs, county news, and church and lodge gatherings closely. Photographs of such places from the period often recorded the main street and the buildings that anchored local commerce. The village's residents would have known it chiefly as a stop on the rail line and a center for the farms around it.
