Island Harbor House stood on Lake George in New York's Adirondack region, a lake that drew summer visitors by steamboat and rail from the mid-1800s on. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed resorts, rail lines and scenic places across the country. Canoes appear among its subjects, a reminder that lakeside hotels offered boating as a main pastime. Dated between 1900 and 1910, it records the resort era just before automobiles began changing how vacationers reached places like Hague on the lake's western shore.
