A bell cast in 1655 by a maker named Grigor'ev, with a portrait of Patriarch Nikon on it, is the subject of this 1674 engraving. Nikon led the Russian Orthodox Church from 1652 until a church council deposed him in 1666, and his reforms of liturgical texts split believers in ways that still matter. The engraving appeared as an illustration in Eric Palmquist's account of a royal embassy to the Tsar of Muscovy. The record's details come from an unverified caption card, so the bell's appearance is worth checking against other sources.
