Carl Van Vechten made this gelatin silver portrait of F. Scott Fitzgerald on June 4, 1932, during the period when he was photographing a long roster of writers, performers and artists in New York. Van Vechten's sitters were often caught in relaxed, candid poses rather than formal studio settings, and his large celebrity series has become one of the most used visual records of the Jazz Age and the decade that followed. Fitzgerald, by 1932, was known for The Great Gatsby and was then struggling with money and with his wife Zelda's health, which makes this sitting a useful snapshot of a writer at a turning point in his career.
