Carl Van Vechten made this gelatin silver portrait of F. Scott Fitzgerald on June 4, 1937, a few years before the novelist's death in 1940. Van Vechten was a novelist and critic who became one of the most prolific portrait photographers of the Harlem Renaissance and the literary world of the 1920s and 1930s, and his sitters included many of the writers and performers of the day. The print is part of his celebrity portrait series at the Library of Congress, which was donated by his estate in 1966. By the time of this sitting, Fitzgerald was living in Hollywood and working as a screenwriter, and his reputation was in a quieter phase than during the Jazz Age.
