Few French painters of the nineteenth century were as widely known in their own time as Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, the subject of this portrait. He built his reputation on small, meticulously detailed canvases of soldiers, Napoleonic campaigns, and genre scenes, and his popularity made him a natural subject for printmakers. The print was registered for copyright in November 1894, about three years after the painter's death in 1891, so it likely reproduces an earlier likeness rather than a sitting from life. An old catalog card links it to the engraver Waltner, a connection the record marks as unverified.
