The White House in Washington, D.C., is shown here from the front, in a 1932 photograph held by the Library of Congress. That year was a busy one for the building: Herbert Hoover was in his final months as president, and the Depression had turned the executive mansion into a symbol of national strain as well as federal authority. The house itself dates to the early 1800s, rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, and by the 1930s its north facade was among the most recognizable views in the country. Pictures like this one were widely reproduced, so they show how the public was meant to see the presidency at the time.
