The north front of the White House, with its formal portico facing Lafayette Square, is the subject here. The photograph dates to around 1934, during Franklin D. Roosevelt's first term, when the Great Depression was reshaping the federal government and the presidency's role in national life. The print bears a U.S. Copyright Office registration number, a reminder that images like this were often filed for legal protection. It shows the exterior as it looked before the extensive interior rebuilding of the late 1940s and early 1950s.
