Titled "Hodgson Smart" in the National Photo Company's own notation, this glass negative is dated June 7, 1922, though the title is noted as unverified. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced a large body of negatives documenting city life, public figures, and events in the early twentieth century, and this plate belongs to that output. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original emulsion coatings, a common condition in glass plates of this age. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
