Jean Jules Jusserand, France's ambassador to the United States from 1902 to 1925, is the figure named in this glass negative, dated May 30, 1922. That was Memorial Day, and Jusserand was a familiar presence in Washington at the time, a diplomat who wrote widely on American literature and history. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's officials and events in the early twentieth century, made the image. The original glass plate has some streaking and surface blemishes from the natural breakdown of its coating, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
