Manuel C. Téllez, Mexico's ambassador to the United States, is the subject of this February 1925 portrait taken by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and events in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s. Relations between Washington and Mexico City were often tense at the time, with disputes over oil, land and church-state conflicts. The glass plate was given to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual deterioration of the original coating.
