Ricardo Jaimes Freyre, the Bolivian-born poet and diplomat whose name appears in this record, was a leading figure in Spanish American modernismo, the literary movement that rejected stiff academic styles in favor of musical, richly imagistic verse. The negative is dated September 25, 1923, though the record notes that the title comes from unverified information written by the National Photo Company. The company was a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed visitors and officials, so the glass plate offers a glimpse of a public portrait from the early 1920s. Streaks and blemishes on the surface reflect the natural decay of the original coating.
