This negative has no descriptive title, only the date October 15, 1923, written as its own label, so its subject has to be read from the plate itself. It is one of the glass negatives made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that photographed the city's streets, buildings, and people in the early twentieth century. Glass plates were the standard working medium then, and they were prized for their sharp detail. The Library of Congress received this one as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The record notes streaks and blemishes caused by the natural breakdown of the original emulsion, which is common in plates of this age.
