Wilder S. Metcalf, listed here as a man "of Kan.," is shown in this portrait made April 6, 1925, while he held the post of Commissioner of Pensions. That office ran the federal system for processing veterans' pension claims, a heavy and politically visible job given how many Civil War and later cases passed through Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed officials and news subjects in the capital, made the negative, and the collection reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift. Note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coating.
