The name on this glass negative belongs to Jean Jules Jusserand, the French ambassador to the United States from 1903 to 1925, whose long tenure made him a well-known figure in Washington. The National Photo Company, which worked in the capital in the early twentieth century, documented officials and public life for newspapers and other clients. The record dates the plate to November 6, 1923, but the title comes from unverified data written by the company, so the occasion itself is uncertain. Streaks and blemishes visible on the glass are typical of deterioration in the original coatings.
