Recorded on November 11, 1923, the fifth anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I, this glass negative captures Woodrow Wilson in the last year of his life. Wilson had led the country through the war as president, but a stroke in 1919 left him partly disabled, and by 1923 he lived in quiet retirement in Washington, D.C. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose images documented Washington figures and events in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coatings.
