This glass negative is titled "Mrs. Wilson," with a date of December 6, 1923, though the title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company operated in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century and made thousands of portrait and street photographs on glass plates, which were common at the time before flexible film became standard. The plate was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Its streaks and blemishes come from the gradual breakdown of the original emulsion coatings, a typical sign of age in glass negatives.
